Adopt - Don't Shop: CATS in Singapore

During the festive season, we human have the tendency to purchase gifts for our friends and family. More than once I have seen parents buying pets for the little ones without reading more information or understand the responsibilities and financial after that.

Awareness and public education is strongly a must and a responsible Pet shop owner would also help to give assistance and advice to consumer. Pet owner should understand that it is not just a merchandise they will be selling but a life partner for the consumer. Making sure that consumer understand what they are getting themselves into. It would also show consumer how well you advice and a good after sales service for them to return to purchase the consumables for their life-long pet.

I've seen abandon in dirty cages hamsters, skinny furry cats, neglected young dogs and outgrown terrapins on the streets. Lots of time is the lack of knowledge and passion that cause these abandonment. Little do they know that abandonment of pets are an offend in Singapore which carry a fine up to $15,000 or jailed up to 18 months. Singapore is looking into situation to case to case severity of the abandonment.

In Early March 2019, a case of 5 cages with 16 cats were abandon in Punggol.  and the scary part is that was not the only case throughout the year, numerous neighborhood have seen abandon cats monthly but have not been reported. Community cat feeders have to use their own pockets money or do their own public funding to trap and sterlise the cats to keep the population around the area to a minimum. Little do people know that a cat can breed 4 times a year and have 3 to 5 littles a time.

A female cat can get pregnant at 4 months old. Sum up, you would get a minimum of additional 20 cats at the end of the year, provided the 20 cats have not breed yet!! Let say if half the little is female cats, you would have minimum of 80 cats end of the year. Thus, whenever an abandon cat is known by the volunteered feeder of the area, they get anxiety immediately and try their every mean to get hold of the cat and have it sterlised or rehome if possible. In such, the numbers of abandon cats, even pure-breed are at scary high number without considering hoarders and backyard breeders that may eventually abandon the over-age cats that they cannot sell or unable to keep due to financial burden on them.

If you go online you would find SPCA, CWS, Animal Human Alliance, Kitten Sanctuary and lots more on social media like facebook, Rescue a CAT that frequently posting abandon cats found, rescure and for re-home. Places that you have hundreds of Cats that you can view and adopt with their terms & conditions which are reasonable as a cat owner. As there's so many of them in shelter or left on the street to became stray and cannot live on their own. Many have realize this and have come forward to join as volunteer community cat feeders to feed a meal. Sadly, in Singapore, cats are not allow in HDB which is the majority of the residences and this regulation will be hard to change overnight even when the government have been aware of the cat abandonment situations in recent years.

In here, I hope to build the awareness the seriousness of having a pet CAT which is a life-long commitment. At least, you will be their life-long owner since a cat can live up to 15 years of age.
Please adopt a cat instead of shopping.
